Ukraine’s path to prosperity ties to EU membership— von der Leyen

(MENAFN) The future prosperity of an independent Ukrainian state is closely tied to its accession to the European Union, which also serves as a "key security guarantee" in itself, the president of the European Commission emphasized Tuesday, following discussions between European and Canadian leaders regarding Ukraine.

"Ultimately, the prosperity of a free Ukrainian state lies in accession to the EU. It’s also a key security guarantee in its own right," Ursula von der Leyen stated on US social media platform X.

Her comments came in the wake of a phone conference organized by the German Chancellor, bringing together leaders from Europe and Canada under the Berlin Format to address support for Ukraine, its security needs, and reconstruction efforts.

Von der Leyen added that EU accession not only benefits the countries that join but strengthens Europe as a whole, citing the advantages demonstrated by previous rounds of enlargement.

European Council leadership expressed appreciation for the coordination meeting, highlighting its role in evaluating recent progress in peace negotiations involving Ukraine.

"We are united in our determination to intensify efforts toward a just and sustainable peace," stated the European Council President.

Sharing his thoughts on X, the German Chancellor noted that allies of Ukraine are actively advancing the peace process.

"Transparency and honesty are now required from everyone – including Russia," he said.

The Finnish President described the talks as "highly useful" for aligning the understanding of the situation regarding the Ukraine peace process and confirmed ongoing collaboration with Ukrainian and American partners in the weeks ahead.

The Dutch Prime Minister emphasized that efforts to secure robust security guarantees "continue unabated."

"All efforts are aimed at achieving lasting peace for Ukraine," he added, noting that the Coalition of the Willing is scheduled to reconvene next week.

Polish leadership expressed cautious optimism. "Peace is on the horizon," the Prime Minister stated.

"There is no doubt that things have happened that give grounds for hope that this war can end, and quite quickly, but it is still a hope, far from 100% certain," he added.

These discussions followed a meeting in Florida on Sunday between the US President and Ukrainian President, where the ongoing conflict with Russia was a central topic. Afterward, the US President told reporters that he had spoken with Russian leadership regarding Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, noting that Moscow intends to assist, "including supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices."

Additionally, European leaders participated in a follow-up phone call with the US and Ukrainian Presidents to discuss "concrete steps" toward ending the war in Ukraine. The hour-long call included several prominent European and NATO leaders, as well as the European Commission President.
