Trump, Putin conclude summit with no Ukraine agreement
The meeting, held at a US air base, marked Putin’s first visit to Western soil since launching the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. After three hours of talks, both leaders made brief statements but declined to take questions — an unusual move for Trump, who typically engages with the press.
Trump described the talks as “extremely productive,” noting that “many points” had been agreed upon but admitting that no final deal was reached. “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” he said, adding that only a handful of issues remained unresolved, with one being “the most significant,” though he did not elaborate.
Putin echoed Trump’s optimism, saying their understanding could help “pave the way for peace in Ukraine.” He also joked about hosting a future meeting in Moscow. Putin further told Trump he agreed with his view that the war would not have begun if Trump, rather than Joe Biden, had been president.
Trump once again dismissed the US intelligence finding that Russia interfered in the 2016 election, calling it a “hoax.” The warm tone between the two leaders contrasted sharply with Trump’s earlier tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
Although Trump had previously suggested a three-way summit with Putin and Zelensky, no such announcement followed the Alaska talks. Trump said he now plans to consult with Zelensky and NATO leaders, many of whom have expressed concerns over his outreach to Moscow.
